An artist that loves oil painting, business, & my cat spooky 💫
Artists tend to be a bit lost when it comes to the finances and business side of things, and I'd like to change that. My videos tend to be highly educational, talking about marketing, income streams, and entrepreneurship for the aspiring visual artist. I also share my journey studying the art fundamentals and leveling up my own art skills over time, as well as the evolution of my business.

I’m sorry but… Cara won’t kill Instagram. Nothing will.

I really do wish the developers behind Cara the best, and I hope they succeed. But let's face it -- the odds are stacked against them.
The dustpan of history is littered with the corpses of apps just like it, and there's no reason to think that it can actually replace Instagram for a majority of artists.

But I'm not a businessman. I'm a simple creativity lover 😊
I got nothing to lose on Instagram, so I’m totally fully switching to Cara (as an artist) in hope to successfully reach some audience there
This is actually really valuable information. Thank you for this and I have subbed. I always thought the quality of my work is what stopped me from living as an artist but I think it's my lack of business sense.
LinkedIn didn’t replace Facebook, but it serves as an alternative for business. Perhaps Cara will become a safe alternative for artists, but its success depends on whether art enthusiasts choose to use the platform.
One thing you should mention is sponsorship making a money like from this video. Because RUclips doesn't make money Without that (Without sponsorship we still getting money from views but really not that much for living). And also a membership. I wish you will always having sponsorship for the future
Thanks for this video. You talked about some things I haven thought about, even though obvious (but as we all know, we often miss the obvious).
I loved the video. Somewhere in the middle I turned my phone on its head to watch it up-side down. But my phone detected the change and flipped the video 😭. Technology is getting too smart. I'm not worried about AI. I think AI should be worried about me.
Adult content. Just. Nsfw. If you are really really desperate then no limit on kinks. If your art is decent then u for sure can make money, in the cost of ur sanity. 😊
I really loved this one. I so appreciate you being vulnerable and honest. I am 67 and thinking about starting a RUclips channel, but I'm paralyzed right now. I don't know where to start first. What if I screw it up? Do I need all the "things" first? (that's usually my m.o., I get all the things and then do nothing with it) I still haven't even done my website. I worry because I am not an artist that traditionally has product to put on a website. I do commissions, but I want to branch out. So many questions about what order to do things in and it's paralyzing, as I said, plus there's the whole care-giver, elderly pets, "I'm 67, how much time do I really have left to build a following, etc." Anyway, I enjoyed your video.
Thank you so much. For me I am 60 years old now and love drawing. I did it at school. But I was always told no-one would be interested in my work. At last I’ve overcome the negative comments after all these years and I’ve decided I’ll go for it. So thanks again Kelsey.
I have been struggling to start my new art project. i seems to have art blockage , i dont know where to start. But i know i want to start something again. i used to make characters for people. i hope i can start again. watching your video make me want to start again
I want to say Thank you SO much im 9 im not too good ini english cuz im from Indonesia but i JUST wnat to say Thank you my drawing improv SOO much from this video ❤❤❤❤
Why should i pay for stuff i get for free? Who are you for me considering paying? From what i hear you offer nothing of real value, just a bunch of gimmicks, theres pros and there’s wishful thinkers.
You should use the board as a dish rack
These people that comments all that are insane. Kelsey you obviously don't deserve any of those. ❤🩹🧡
hey kelsey ur beautiful your content is amazing been watching ur videos from few days u need to improve the color grading and add key points through the captions bit transitions and minimalist background music its bit appealing just an observation it can get more engaged audience Lemme know if you need an video editor.
Thank you for your honesty and transparency about your earnings, it is something quite rare in the world of artists.
Just found your page a few days ago... I am 30 and always told myself that art isn't a career, that I can't do it, that no one would want my art. I listened to others when they told me to just do art as a hobby or that I would fail. I struggled with school, community college, trade schools, odd jobs etc. I kept saying I'll try later, to wait until I have a little bit of money or to just give up the dream of being an artist all together. I have been trying to give up that itch or put it on the back burner for over 15 years. Guess what, I still want to be an artist and the urge to create has NEVER gone away. I love your encouragement, honest and transparency... I'm taking notes and trying to allow myself to JUST CREATE. <3
Even if IG was killing itself but in all honesty they may not stop or learn we jus have to know how to take back our works and jus say screw them
I know this video came out in 2022 but I would love to see you do this yearly so we can see what's in your head and how you modify your business plan throughout the year. Just watching this video was really helpful and It would be so cool to to see how it evolves for you over time.
here's the latest one of these if you're curious! ruclips.net/video/N5cK_HtP2PY/видео.html
This is very resourceful for me! Thank you for making this content ❤❤❤
Is Etsy really work for artist? I am struggling to open an Etsy store
I am about to upload my lengthiest most rambling art video on my tiny channel and i'm starting to regret that choice........ all my other vids are pretty short and to the point but I kinda indulged in this last one. I guess I'll see how it goes. Also i just *can't* justify investing money in something that is making me 0 money (and I am currently unemployed...)
Diamond words. Subbed🎉🎉🎉
Hi Ms. Kelly I am inspired by how you tell your journey as an artist and because of that Im subscribing to your channel to learn more from you🙂
I truly enjoy a lot of your videos and have gained some good insight on making money as an artist from watching you, but after watching this video I feel like it should be retitled, "How I make money as a youtuber who does art on the side"
You don't can't kill Instagram cuz it's already dead. For me as least 😁
Let me share a story. Once upon a time there was this thing called MySpace. There was also things called mIRC and Ask Jeeves and AOL. I don't know if Cara will replace Instagram, or if Bluesky will replace Twitter, but I can fairly confidently say something WILL. btw... I'm an old. Been using the internet since 1990 and something ALWAYS comes along and replaces the old thing. ALWAYS
I use Mastodon and Pixelfed and it's the best for me. Your argument to submit to big tech corporations is not correct. I come from the Czech Republic. A country that is now part of the EU but experienced Soviet totalitarianism in the past. If all people thought the same way as you, my country is still part of the USSR today and I had to live in totalitarianism. What many people don't realize is that totalitarianism only survives because many people simply accept it.
Love you!!!! Thanks for sharing with us.
THANK YOUUU
this was inspiring, how bout we get a walkthrough of your day to day life or a timeline?
Hey what beautiful page !! I would love to see a tutorial of adobe xd !! i did not know square space was good? it is worth it? Can you MAKE A VIDEO ON THAT ? Much love from Argentina !! Thanks a lot love your videos!!
Been a year, howd it go
I completely agree with you. People use social media for art completely wrong. These apps aren’t made with artist in mind they aren’t made for that. Also, many artist post on these apps not for conversions but for clout and ego boosting for being artist.
For anyone who hasn't finished watching the video and has formed an opinion based solely on the comments - definitely finish watching 🥹 It's not that Kelsey is simply being pessimistic or defending IG; she highlights the implications of switching to Cara from a _business_ perspective - explaining why this makes the switch less ideal (for business-focused artists) than people might make it seem. She also gives a little advice on how to approach marketing your art with social media _(IG or any other platform)_ more effectively. As I've said in other comments, I already didn't like IG anymore for quite some time now; and* marketing isn't really a big focus for me at the moment, so I don't think someone like me would have many issues using Cara over IG. I just want to share my art in a space that feels safe and not so... "busy" and overstimulating. _* Edit: minor rewording_
You are amazing!
I never heard any road noise.
I'm a landscape artist, but i envy the talent of drawing people, I hope this could help me, if it did THANK YOU.
Great advice, Kelsey. I had never thought about hashtags or communities where your audience or target customers would be. Very valuable insight.
You made really excellent points here. I definitely have things I should think over and do much better for marketing than I have in the past. For myself, I’m part of the demographic that’s not leaving Instagram FOR Cara - I’m leaving Instagram. Meta’s new TOS year including the scraping of content for generative AI was my final breaking point on what I can accept from them. Am I trying out Cara? Yes, but not to replace Instagram. I’ll try Cara to see if some support can get them reach their goals and so I can see beautiful art, but it won’t be my personal strategy for my art. In general, I’m going to pare down where I’m spread too thin on social media, target the social media and sites that I believe are most relevant to what I’m actually trying to do (such as RUclips, Etsy, and Webtoon for now), and take my website and an email newsletter more seriously. Your advice here to think through what terms and tags our target audience might search is also awesome. Thanks for sharing!
For me Cara has improved my life in getting back to actually making art that I enjoy. The distractions are minimum and perfect to look at on small breaks. Nothing as fancy as Instagram but useful in its own way. Instagram is good to keep in touch with current followers but as a beginner it gets really difficult to make a name on instagram in 2024.
Instagram doesn't even bring me any business. At all. For more than a decade.
And I've been on Cara for a week, and I'm almost pretty sure I will bet at least $100 that Cara will not bring me any business, either.
Hey I met with some local printers out of the East Bay if you are interested I can share the IG
This is quite possibly the most important video I have watched and/or will ever watch. This has absolutely changed my art style for the better and in all honesty, my life. It sounds dramatic, but after so long; hating my art and everything about it, it's so life altering to love what you make.
<3
Market is saturated though there’s something you’re not sharing for making this much
it literally is not saturated, there is always a shortage of high quality educational content online
This Video just showed up to me, and as someone who works with art and got a chance to recently start studying art in university, I was Flabbergasted at how much teachers refuse to actually teach the Fundamentals.
Wow, very nice!!! Did you make up your databases or did you find pre-made templates? I’m also an artist and struggling to understand these databases 🤣🫣 ….oh wait, I see you posted your templates!! Omg thank you for sharing - def taking a look 👀
For the past several years, I have really wanted to be a Mask maker. I am not sure what category that would fall under... But I yeah, I am not talking about the mass produced Halloween masks (no shame in those) but rather made out of paper mâché, beads, silicone etc. Not just monsters or single use silicone pieces for a character.
